The controversy surrounding boxing in the 2028 Olympics primarily stems from issues related to governance, scoring, and the sport’s overall integrity. In recent years, the International Boxing Association (IBA), which oversees Olympic boxing and numerous other events, has faced scrutiny due to accusations of corruption, lack of transparency, and disputes over judging practices.

Scrutiny over the IBA’s oversight began during a significant number of scoring controversies and questionable judging at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The IBA has also faced financial challenges, with reports indicating debts in the millions. In 2019, the IBA was suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to governance issues. It was reinstated in 2021, but the IBA remains under scrutiny for its compliance with IOC requirements. The IBA has initiated reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability, but these efforts have met with mixed responses from the boxing community.

Still, boxing remains one of the most popular sports in the Olympics, with participation from nearly 200 nations.

Thankfully, there are alternatives to the International Boxing Association (IBA) for overseeing boxing in the 2028 Olympics.  These include:

  1. World Boxing Association (WBA): A major professional boxing association.
  2. World Boxing Council (WBC): Another major professional boxing organization.
  3. National Governing Bodies: Countries could work with their own national boxing federations to create a unified approach for Olympic participation, potentially sidelining or replacing the IBA.
  4. A New Governing Body: There have been discussions about forming a new entity specifically for Olympic boxing, focusing on transparency and integrity.

The IOC will closely monitor the IBA’s progress leading up to the Olympics. Without satisfactory changes, there could be a risk of boxing being excluded. The future of boxing in the Olympics will depend on how these organizations and other stakeholders adapt to current challenges and calls for reform.

iKnow: that Boxing is a popular Olympic sport and should not be canceled or excluded from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by the IOC.
