Today, lighters and matches are most frequently used for lighting cigarettes and cigars, candle lighting, grilling and barbecuing, crafting and DIY projects and various camping and outdoor activities.
While their use has shifted with technology, lighters and matches remain practical tools in various everyday activities. Zippo Manufacturing Company was founded in 1932 by George G. Blaisdell in Bradford, Pennsylvania. The original Zippo lighter design was inspired by an Austrian lighter that had a windproof design, which Blaisdell sought to improve. The first Zippo lighter featured a simple rectangular shape and a hinged lid, making it wind-resistant and easy to use.
The name “Zippo” was derived from the word “zipper,” which Blaisdell liked for its connotations of modernity. The company’s commitment to quality and lifetime guarantee contributed to its reputation. During World War II, Zippo lighters became very popular among soldiers, largely due to their windproof design, which made them reliable in various weather conditions. The U.S. military recognized their utility, and Zippo produced lighters specifically for the armed forces, often featuring the soldiers’ unit insignias or personalized engravings. Soldiers added their own art, initials, names, words of inspiration and accomplishments to their Zippo lighters.
The company also adopted a policy of donating lighters to troops, which not only boosted morale but also solidified the brand’s association with the military. By the end of the war, Zippo lighters had become a symbol of American spirit and resilience. Their rugged design and practicality helped ensure their continued popularity long after the war.
Zippo continues its manufacturing today in Pennsylvania. The company has introduced new, special edition, themed and nostalgic lighters. The brand has also expanded its product line to include accessories and outdoor products. Today, Zippo lighters are not only practical tools but also collectible items, celebrated for their craftsmanship and iconic design.
